Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)

Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)

A large, bushy evergreen shrub, Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree), is putting on quite a colourful show in the Fellow's garden at the moment. Upon closer inspection the evergreen stems are covered in colourful fruit and creamy white flowers. A mix of red, orange and yellow strawberry-like fruit hang together in clusters all over the shrub, they are edible but are said to leave a bit of an unpleasant aftertaste, ('unedo'  means 'I eat one') and this blogging gardener is not going to test this out, but there is a gardener with a culinary background in the team that will. The fruit have formed from the previous year's flowers so next autumn this shrub should be covered in colourful fruit again.
