This is the time of year when the Galanthophiles, an enthusiastic collector of snowdrops, get very excited by the tiny white flowers that have emerged from the earth beneath. Today, three students, Hannah, Hannah and Kate joined the team and helped us move hundreds of snowdrops from the path to the Canal Building to the Nuffield Lawn. Although it is slightly too early to move the snowdrops, the best time is when they have finished flowering and still in leaf, known as 'in the green', we have still moved a large quantity to their new home creating an even better display for years to come.Thursday 25 February 2010

I can't believe you've had a blog for so long and I didn't come across it previously. I'm an avid reader now!
ReplyDeleteI have a simple question: in previous summers there's been a nice area in the orchard with a bench where there's various paths through long-grass. At the moment it just appears to all be normal grass. Is this something that grows rapidly in the summer months, or has the area been re-turfed?
Also, I would be happy to volunteer to help with the new vegetable garden behind the gym, although as an employed researcher would find it difficult to take time off during the week. Are there any Saturday shifts?

Glad to have you as a reader Jamie. The grass area in the orchard is mown down in September and is normal grass. We allow the grass to grow throughout the year creating a meadow effect with the bench being moved back to within the meadow in time for the summer, it is currently on the south facing wall opposite the orchard enjoying what little sun we have at the moment.
